Backcasting
« Back to Glossary Index
Backcasting is the process and analysis of looking backward in time to determine the implications and needs of proposed solutions. If a design team offers a future solution, backcasting requires them to work backward from the solution to the present to identify what needs to happen in order to make the solution viable and doable. Backcasting asks, “if we want to achieve a certain goal, what ‘actions’ must be taken and what ‘needs’ must be met to get there?”(*)
