POEMS Matrix
A structured observation method that documents facts and insights on PEOPLE | OBJECTS | ENVIRONMENTS | MESSAGES | SERVICES. Each area listed in POEMS is documented with the goal of revealing behavioral patterns, successes, challenges, and pain points.

PEOPLE: Who are the people, what are their roles, behaviors, etc?

OBJECTS: What artifacts are being used, tools, and interactions?

ENVIRONMENTS: Where are the users? Where do they spend the most time and engagement? And what in the environment affects their actions?

MESSAGES: How do they communicate? Is it personal, social, etc? What is the language or method – verbal, digital, interactions, or physical?

SERVICES: What apps, and access types are used or dependent on? How, why, and for what purpose?
